There I was, hanging on to the momentary pause before I answered the
question. The question posed by the
small business niche marketing consultant Dominic Canterbury.
"Yes, this is what I want to do."
I have started my business in web design, graphic design and UI
design originally. Like most small business entrepreneurs, the initial
excitement was huge. But the lessons I've learned: enormous.
Without going into lengthy details of the lessons I've learned, there I
was: after a few sessions with Dominic who presented the decision in front of
me. Yet another path was open in front of me and my answer to his
question would be the first step to another journey as an entrepreneur.
"Alright, your homework is to start a blog TODAY. Get a blogroll,
start commenting on other blogs and start posting regarding this TOPIC."
What's my topic?
I am a user interface designer with a job title of "application
developer". My career path so far? Graphic Designer -> Web
Designer -> Web Developer. What area is my expertise among a team
of 4 developers? User interface design.
What do I hate? Applications that go sour. That's right - I'm
involved in one right now that one of my old co-workers developed.
I've seen too many of them and I'm sick of it. When the initial phases of
the application development goes wrong, there is little chance for the
actual development to go right. Sure the code is clean and the backend
is normalized. But the interaction that the users have with the
application is just not good enough.
What is my aspiration and new direction in business?
To help web
entrepreneurs create successful web applications. I'm not interested
in plopping out user interfaces that are simply pretty. I need to be
involved
in understanding the target audience, how they work, and THEN design
the prototypes and user interfaces that turn the applications into a
success. There are masters of user experience that I will continue to
follow in my blog roll. This blog is mainly for developer turned web
entrepreneurs who has not been exposed to user experience design and
its powerful effects that it can make on web applications.
